MFA

Ok. I'm going to tell you all about my trip today but first! I got the sweetest present ever! My very generous and very talented friend Ferris knitted me a shawl! And it matches the blanket she made for my goddaughter. Awwww!

Shawl with note from Ferris.

Me and my shawl!

Me using the shawl on my head.

Today I went with my friend Olive and her daughter (Former Nannying Kid) to the Museum of Fine Arts. I was going to get us library passes but it turns out Olive is a member so we got in for free! I've been dying to see the "#techstyle" exhibit and she has wanted to see the "Megacities Asia" exhibit so it was a perfect plan.

The #techstyle exhibit contained some really cool stuff. Threeasfour's Harmonograph dress which is shaped like a swirl and based on the Fibonacci sequence, Pauline Van Dongen's neoprene black dress with solar paneled collar that can charge a cell phone after two hours in the sun, Kate Goldsworthy's Zero Waste Dress, Ying Gao's Incertitudes shirt and short which respond to audio waves, and Issey Mikaye and Jun Mitani's 123 5 Collection which are origami inspired sustainable recycled polyester dresses fold into flat polygons for easy packing. Plus lots more...

Anthozoa Cape and Skirt by Iris van Herpen and Neri Oxman with Prof. W. Craig Carter.

The #techstyle exhibit even has Viktoria Modesta's spike prosthetic leg. For those who don't know, she's a Latvian pop star and MIT fellow who had her lower leg amputated when she was 20 and she has incorporated really awesome prosthetics into her futuristic image. Here's an example:

The Megacities Asia exhibit is actually sprawled throughout the museum (plus outside the Huntington entrance and at Faneuil Hall), just like megacities sprawl. A megacity is a city with a population of over ten million and Asia has more than any other continent. This exhibit has works by eleven artists who respond to the conditions of their home cities Beijing, Shanghai, Delhi, Mumbai, and Seoul by making sculptures using objects they encounter in daily life in those cities. Here are some pictures I dug up online of the exhibit:

Snake Ceiling (2009) by Ai Weiwei.

8' x 12' (2009) by Hema Upadhyay.

Forever (2003) by Ai Weiwei.

If you live in MA or the surrounding areas and can make a trip to the MFA to see these exhibits, I think it's totally worth it.

Adopting An Older Child

Photo from Canada Adopts that says "There are no unwanted children,
just unfound families."

When most people think about becoming a parent, they think about having a baby that's biologically related to them. Many people turn to adoption as an alternative because they're gay or infertile. I'm a little different. My family was created through adoption and even when I was a kid I assumed that's how I'd become a parent. Genetic connections have never felt important to me. And now that I'm feeling emotionally ready to parent I'm realizing that age doesn't feel important to me either. I've nannied for several babies, worked in my church's infant and toddler room, worked at a preschool, and babysat for a bunch of little kids. I feel like I've gotten my baby and toddler fix.

Been there, done that.
Sleepless nights, diapers, carrying a kid around, pushing a stroller everywhere, and potty training just don't hold much appeal for me. I've already been there done that with teaching kids the alphabet, hearing first words, watching first steps, and singing nursery rhymes.

When I picture myself parenting, I picture teaching my kid to swim and ride a bike, going on trips to the aquarium and museums, flying kites, gardening with them, playing video games and board games, taking family vacations, reading them bedtime stories, helping them with schoolwork, shooting hoops in the backyard, doing cool science experiments, volunteering with them, helping them learn to budget, teaching them to drive a car, having conversations with them about life, etc. All of those things involve older kids and teenagers.

There are so many school-aged kids who need adoptive parents and meanwhile the majority of people who want to adopt are stuck on the idea of a baby - as young as possible, with no special needs, and ideally the same race as them. Since I don't care about having the youngest kid possible, I'm going to leave the babies and toddlers for the people who are so desperate to have them. I'll go into adoption and specifically ask for a school aged kid.

Frankly, I think a school-aged kid will fit better into my life anyway. I'm aiming to adopt in two years so my plan is that I'll ask to be matched with a kid who is somewhere in the 6-8 age range. By then Mini T will be 5 and Terzo will be 9, so a kid who is 6-8 will be between them in age which means none of the kids will have to deal with a same-age peer living with them.

A kid that age will already be in full-time school which means no daycare costs and any learning problems they have will probably have been diagnosed so I'll have a better idea of what I'll need to do to support them. A school aged child is better able to communicate their feelings and needs than a baby or very young child, which I think will be really helpful to me as a first time parent. There's often more family history available with older child adoption, which is great for the kid since it's important for them to know where they came from. And with an older child, to some extent, DCF can help match our personalities to each other since a school aged child already has a well-developed personality and their own established interests.

Mac and Cheese Throwdown!

Today I hosted a Mac and Cheese Throwdown. It was awesome! I'd planned this event a while ago so by the time today rolled around I was SO ready to sample all of the mac and cheese! Just because, I've reposted the text of my Facebook event below so you can see it...

towards each other with a red heart floating over their heads between them.

"It's time for a mac and cheese throwdown! Bring yourselves, bring your friends/partners/kids, bring some mac and cheese to enter into the competition, and most importantly bring your appetite!

Guests will be sampling and voting on the contest entries in shoebox ballot style. Eating starts at 12:30pm. Voting begins at 1pm.

There will be three categories of mac and cheese:

Traditional - Must be vegetarian and must stick to the traditional format of macaroni, cheese(s), other dairy, spices, and optional breadcrumbs. Stovetop or baked but no "weird" ingredients.

Unconventional - Must be vegetarian and must contain both macaroni and cheese. Other than that, anything goes!

Vegan - No animal products whatsoever. Must contain macaroni and some sort of creamy or "cheesy" sauce.

If you want me to be extra happy, let me know ahead of time whether you're bringing mac and cheese and which category it falls into so I can aim to have a somewhat balanced amount in each category."

We had about 30 people there if you count the kids and we had a good amount of contest entries which were fairly evenly split among the categories. The non-cooks who asked what they could bring got assigned salad, fruit, and drinks. Fancy even made vegan cupcakes for the occasion! Joy got really into party planning and wound up making a playlist of kid-appropriate but actually good dance music for us. The party was outside so we set the speakers, prizes, and ballot box up on a table in the backyard. Then we put up Plum's pop-up tent and we set up the mac and cheese underneath it in case it rained. Fancy and Alice were the best early arrival guests ever and they assembled picnic tables for the occasion.

The three contest winners were: Fancy's Vegan Mac and Cheese, Joy's Cheese Monstah, and my Chinese Mac and Cheese. The only thing that could have improved this party was if someone decided to dress up in a mac and cheese costume like this child:

Zoo Day!

Today I went with Karma, Joy, Bone, the kid housemates, two of Joy's cousins, and Bone's daughter and her friend to the Franklin Park Zoo. We made it through probably half of the zoo before deciding the heat was unbearable and the kids needed an ice cream and playground break. I want to go back! Especially because I discovered they have camel rides so of course I want to ride a camel.

Fierce Friday

In case you somehow missed it. I'm the very proud godfather of Wolfie, who I get to see at the end of June when I go to France. Isn't she adorable?!

Adorable baby sitting in the grass in a blue, white, and pink dress.

She eats solid food now!

So because I'm a godfather, I'm going to post an outfit built around one of my two godfather shirts. It's sort of like this image below (thank you Google!):

Marlon Brando is the Fairy Godfather.

So for my outfit I'm wearing my black and white Godfather movie shirt, my comfy and lightweight long white skirt, my stompy black boots, my dandelion seed necklace, pink nail polish, and I'm holding a fairy wand because why not?

Me looking through my fairy wand.

A full body shot of me.

My skirt and feet.

My dandelion necklace.

See? We match now:

And I'm also posting some graffiti that I felt suited the occasion:
